Variable-torque brake/clutch

The Variable Torque Brake/Clutch was developed by Honeybee through Phase I and II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding. A form, fit, and function prototype was built for the Grappling Arm of the University of Maryland’s RANGER robotic platform. It showed improved performance with reduced size and weight over the preexisting Electroid brake it was designed to replace, and demonstrated excellent strength-to-weight characteristics, reliable bi-directional holding, low wear, and minimal particulate generation.
