Honeybee has developed a prototype telescoping drill system. This system has a deployed-to-stowed drill ratio of about two to one, allowing deeper subsurface drilling from a smaller stowed volume than non-telescoping systems. The prototype autonomously deploys and connects drill string segments to drill up to two meters depth.

This work was funded by NASA’s Astrobiology Science and Technology Instrument Development (ASTID) program. The system demonstrates telescopic deployment and drill string connection, and drills into limestone.
