Design and prototype fabrication was completed on a very strong, stiff and compact robotic joint capable of passing electrical signals and power across a rotating interface without utilizing cables or slip rings.

The robotic joint utilizes innovative technologies demonstrated previously by Honeybee Robotics, including variable brake/clutch transmissions incorporating 3-D locking sprags and flexible Rotary Band Contacts (RBCs). The resulting joint featured a compact configuration with low backlash and high-efficiency, non-harmonic output, non-ratcheting, high drive train stiffness and cableless power transmission across the joint.
