DAME drill being tested in Canadian Arctic permafrost
For our work on the Mars missions, we have packed our bags and headed off to analog testing sites in California, upstate New York, Arizona, Devon Island in the Arctic Circle, and the arid plains of Spain. Field test sights, generally selected by science advisory committees, mimic rock formations, dryness, temperature, and terrain of the intended environment.
